Annie Besant. A radical political voice, Besant was involved in the 1888
matchgirls' strike at the Bryant and May factory, which brought the appalling
working conditions of many factory workers to greater public attention. Later
she campaigned for self-rule in India, and was a prominent member of the
mystical Theosophical Society.
